Archant

Living in Bangladesh, Asina, aged 28, is a widow with three children.

She works very hard at any job she can - looking after goats or cows, or labouring in the fields. Anwar, her eldest son would like to start school, but he must help his mother, struggling to earn enough. Asiana said: “When my husband died poverty paralysed me. People say my land is good to make a tea garden, but I have no money to do that.”

The Fairtrade charity, Traidcraft Exchange, works alongside smallholders providing training on cultivation and good agricultural practice. For many others, like Asina, learning new skills means they can leave poverty behind.

And with the magnificent help of the people of north Norfolk we are helping to support this work.

We raised £350.03 from events at St Peter’s and St Andrew’s churches in Sheringham in Fairtrade Fortnight, and together with the profits from stalls in north Norfolk, since Christmas, we have sent a cheque for £1,000.03, to Traidcraft Exchange. The UK government will double all donations to this Charity until April 11.

So well done to everyone in north Norfolk who helped - from Overstrand to Briston, and many places in between.
