For many men, living with prostate cancer is an experience they never fully share with their loved ones or friends.
So a Norfolk woman has come up with a new event to promote talking about the disease over a pint and slice of pie, as Pies and Pints for a Purpose comes to Wells for the first time this month.
Diana Reynolds came up with the idea having seen statistics which showed more men die from prostate cancer, than women die from breast cancer.
She said: 'I was so shocked. I know some men don't necessarily want to talk about checking themselves, and I always do Macmillan coffee mornings where women talk about breast cancer.
'And although we need more money, we always need more for every charity, I thought I should do something for prostate cancer as it's such a huge issue. I can't run or skip, so I thought I'd try this.'
The former living-in care assistant continued: 'So I thought I'd do a 'manly' Macmillan, and came up with the pies and pints idea. I spoke to our pub landlord Stephen Tucky, who said that men love to come in for a pint and pie, and that he'll do a pint for £1 off on the day.'
The event will be held on June 30 at the Edinburgh Inn in Wells-next-to-the-Sea from 3pm to 6pm.
'We're going to have all sorts of pies, small ones to eat with a drink and big ones to take home, just the same as a coffee morning,' the 64-year-old continued.
The event has already been backed by Stephen Fry, who had prostate cancer surgery in 2018.
Ms Reynolds said: 'I wrote to him and invited him along, but got a very lovely reply saying he was sadly away on work in Canada. So he's sent us a signed picture which we'll be putting into the raffle.'
None alcoholic beverages will also be on offer courtesy of Ms Reynolds' daughter Tasha, who owns the adjoining restaurant to the pub, Ollie's.
Ms Reynolds said: 'I'm hoping that it'll be a success in Wells this year, and then more towns and villages will take it on year after year, so that once a year on June 30, the day is known as the triple P day.'
