Photographs have captured the panicked moments tens of Mundesley drivers lost control of their vehicles in the icy conditions of north Norfolk.

A well used stretch of road leading out of the village, the B1145, has become increasingly treacherous as the Beast of the East rages on.

Amateur photographer Christon Iliffe left his home with the intention of flying his drone, but instead spent an hour pulling nearly 20 cars out of banks of snow and black ice.

Mr Iliffe, 30, said: 'I parked at the old Elephant Playbarn just off the B1145 to take some pictures as the cars came past, but the drivers just kept getting stuck. 'The problem is that route is so exposed that when the wind blows from the east it knocks the snow into the car. You could hardly see past the end of your bonnet.'

He added: 'You can see in the pictures that sometimes it's absolutely clear and then moments later when the wind blew and the snow came across, you can't see what's coming the other way.

'Cars would follow in the tracks of the ones which had gone before, which was in the middle of the road. This meant the snow was banking up either side - it came up to my thigh when I put my foot into it.

'If drivers lost control of their cars, that's what they went into.'

Mr Iliffe says he helped get 15 cars which were stuck in the space of an hour.

The father-of-two, who has lived in the village for 20 years, continued: 'What I was really surprised by were how many elderly people were out. I'd say about half of the people I saw were elderly.

'I found one car which had got stuck and the older lady inside was just sitting there, she said she simply couldn't move her car.'

Mr Iliffe, who also works as a seasonal quay assistant on the River Wensum, added: 'I always want to help when I can, I go out and grit the car park and our steps, and I knew I couldn't just take pictures and not help out.'
