It's a 180-mile journey from Aldborough in north Norfolk to Aldborough in Yorkshire and the accents of the people living there are very different- but you can still see how the two villages could get mixed up.

And that's exactly what happened to Sue Metcalf, who lives in the Norfolk village.

She said: “Having recently advertised some vacant allotment plots in our parish magazine I was pleased to find an enquiry had been left on my phone when I returned home late on Friday night.

“I was out the next morning and intended ringing the caller back on my return.

“When we eventually made contact with each other he said he lived five minutes away from the allotments and we arranged to meet by the shed in ten minutes.

“Although we made polite conversation, I had struggled to understand him and catch his surname, due to his broad Yorkshire accent,

“I was probably a few minutes late getting there but there was no sign of him. I began wondering if someone was winding me up and the accent was a ruse to put me off.

“I rang the number when I got home to find out why he hadn't turned up, only to discover that he lived in Aldborough in Yorkshire.

“He had been to his local allotments and had been wondering where I had got to.

“We enjoyed a laugh about the situation, although I only caught half of what he said because of his accent.”
