Dozens of people gathered at the Market Cross before a giant wooden crucifix was hoisted into the air and carried through the town centre in a recreation of the first Easter.

The Revd Rachael Dines, from the town's St Nicholas Church, said: “As we walked around the town we were drawing public attention to the death of Jesus upon a cross. He gave His life for us. On Easter Day we will celebrate His resurrection but today we remember what it cost Him.

“It was a very respectful, quiet statement, not noisy, like some today. It's very reflective and a chance fur us and others to think about what Good Friday is all about.”

Church spokesman Sandy Topham added: “Starting off from the Market Cross, the cross was carried round the town stopping at various places for a short passage from the Bible, which was read by members of the different churches. The walk finished at the Roman Catholic church where Father James Walsh said the final words.”
