North Norfolk District Council election - who is standing in your ward?

The clock is counting down to the local elections on Thursday, May 2, when all 40 seats on North Norfolk District Council will go up for grabs.

Here are the responses we received for candidates in the wards Bacton, Beeston Regis and The Runtons, Briston, Coastal and Cromer Town.

Bacton

Fiona Hall (L) - Having had a successful career in Nursing and subsequently business, I retired back to Norfolk having successfully studied at Great Yarmouth College to get me started. I am currently a School Governor at Sidestrand Hall School and actively work in the local community as a volunteer. We live in a wonderfully beautiful part of the UK, attracting significant numbers of tourists to our area which in turn brings much needed financial support to our local economy - we must protect this. Funding is tight, this means careful and wise not wasteful use of our resources would enable our district council to meet the needs of our local communities, sadly this hasn't been the case and I believe we would benefit from a fresh start with new councillors with no history - we deserve better!

Pauline Porter (I) - I moved to Norfolk in 1990 spending 12 years at Potter Heigham before moving to Walcott 15 years ago. I spent time as the Clerk to Ludham Parish Council and was a founder member of Ludham and Potter Heigham Youth Club. I was also the Civil Protection Co-ordinator for Potter Heigham.

I was co-opted onto Walcott Parish Council in March 2012 and have been the Chair ever since. I attend as many meetings regarding local issues as I can at District council offices and other venues. I am the Parish Council representative on the Bacton Gas Terminal Liaison Committee, the Coastal Forum and the Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping Local Liaison Group.

I was part of the working party that managed to achieve better drainage on the Coast Road and will work to get even more drains.

I am also a volunteer search technician with Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue who are on call 24 \7 to assist the police search for missing persons.

Crispian Riley-Smith (C) - I want to achieve affordable housing for the local community.

Support the key industrial activity of Bacton Gas Terminal and the local community and environment.

The issues of climate change are affecting us all in ways we thought unimaginable only a few years ago and we need to work together from a grass roots level and all take individual responsibility and action.

Regarding my background I am totally new to politics and only joined the Conservative Party in January, however I have worked in the Art World throughout my career and run 3 businesses in the industry based in the UK and USA (for the last 12 years been living in Yorkshire and recently back to Norfolk where I grew up) I have always been a lover of all things rural and of course anything to do with art. I am proud father of 3 children.

Clive Stockton (LD) - Clive Stockton has lived in Happisburgh for 28 years and appreciates the myriad problems experienced daily by local residents. Clive's background is in Engineering and this background stood him in good stead when, as Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council between 2003 and 2011, he fought for justice at the coast. He was instrumental in the Pathfinder bid which enabled several successful coastal projects to be completed, although sadly this was discontinued with a change of central government. Clive's other roles included Local Housing and Economic Development with successful projects including Exception Sites for Local Housing, the North Norfolk Business Forum and the completion of the Wells quayside centre.

Clive's priority as a councillor will be, if elected, that of listening to residents, identifying problems, and resolving them whilst at the same time ensuring that the council deals with the big issues in the area in a timely and informed manner.

Beeston Regis and The Runtons

Sarah Butikofer (LD) - I have had the great honour of serving as District Councillor for the Runtons for the last four years. More recently I have become the Council Leader and have striven to create a more cohesive cross-party working Council.

Since my election in 2015 I have worked together with residents and your local parish councils, to improve road safety, drive improvements on broadband connectivity, saved the mobile library service, and campaigned to get our public conveniences open all year round. I have also handled countless planning concerns and fly tipping issues.

I am standing again because I want to continue to use my experience to help local residents get their voices heard, their concerns addressed and to build on the work I have already started. I know there is so much more we can achieve together to make Beeston Regis and The Runtons an even better place than it is already, and I am up for the challenge.

Mike Knowles (C) - My name is Mike Knowles and many people will know me as the Chairman of Beeston Regis Parish Council, a role I have filled for the past nine years.

I have been the serving Councillor for Chaucer ward, which included Beeston Regis, for the past four years, and am now standing as the Conservative candidate in our new ward of Beeston Regis and The Runtons.

I was born in West Runton and brought up in Beeston and have spent almost all of my life living here.

I am very excited about this new ward; our three villages have unique characteristics and requirements, sandwiched as they are between the two towns of Sheringham and Cromer.

I believe our residents need a truly local representative on the District Council and I hope our voters will be able to support me on May 2nd.

Jenny English (C)

Jolanda Stenton (LD) - I am a finance manager living in the lovely village of Briston.

I am passionate about helping others and I care deeply about protecting the environment. I am standing to represent Briston because I would like to contribute in making our community better and stronger. I am a great animal lover and animal welfare is very close to my heart.

I would like target loneliness amongst the elderly. I volunteer teaching computer skills (I do have a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology and Telecommunications with teaching rights).

I would like focus on ambulance response time in rural communities. I strongly believe that we should have an equal access to emergency services no matter where we live.

I actively support The East Anglian Air Ambulance 24/7 campaign.

Coastal

Michael Dalby (C) - I'm a training nurse in St David's Nursing Home, Sheringham. I see issues affecting older residents every day, the importance of excellent social care, of combating loneliness and mental health issues. I want to work for all residents but put our most vulnerable first.

At age 17, I couldn't vote for Leave in the EU referendum, but I campaigned for it. I'm sorry we didn't leave, as we should have done, on 29th March. And it's wrong to promote a second referendum, when you haven't delivered on the first. These issues go to the heart of our democracy.

Conservatives at NNDC have achieved a great deal in just 4 years, all while keeping council tax low. I believe our new ideas – free car parking trials, supporting buses with a local lottery, bike hire, looking after our environment, and supporting our young people are vitally important to our society's success.

Steve Rush (L)

Karen Ward (LD)

Cromer Town

Timothy Adams (LD) - I have previously run my own business, and serve on a number of charities and voluntary groups in the town, including serving as Chair of the Cromer Skate Park Charity.

I have been a Councillor for eight years this year, including two previous terms as Mayor of Cromer.

During that time I have seen public confidence in North Norfolk District Council fall considerably as a result the mismanagement of the Conservatives, their speculative proposals for budget hotels on our car parks, and the deterioration of our open spaces and childrens play equipment.

Despite these needs, the recently deposed Conservative administration blocked investment in childrens play equipment in Cromer for political purposes.

We have a great deal of opportunities and challenges to realise and overcome in Cromer.

I'm standing for election at District Council this year to help bring about a fresh start for NNDC, and a fresh start for Cromer.

Mike Bossingham (G) - Rev'd Dr Mike Bossingham is a member of the Green Party and a retired Methodist minister. He also serves on Cromer Town Council and is involved in the planning for our presence at the Norfolk Show, the New Year's Day fireworks and the Christmas Lights.

He was one of the group who rescued the Skate Park and now acts as its treasurer. He is also helping to revive the British Legion in Cromer and, here too, is acting as its treasurer.

If elected Mike promises that he will always put Cromer the environment and wildlife first. He will promote the creation and use of efficient and extensive public transport systems along with footpaths and cycleways.

He uses our lovely local shops and coffee shops and will seek to defend them. He is not against new housing developments providing they are environmentally neutral and local people are given priority.

Roger Cunnington (C) - I have lived in Cromer nearly all my life, it's where I work, it's where I've brought up my children. After leaving Cromer secondary school I went to work on the trawlers out of Lowestoft, I then served my country in Her Majesty's armed forces, before lately working as a carpet fitter, I now feel its time for me to give back something to Cromer.

I believe the Conservative Group at the District Council have done an excellent job, their views on council tax, support for local jobs and the economy and many of their other policies mirror my own thoughts.

Scarlett Franklin (L)

Phil Harris (L) - I am currently the longest serving Cromer Town Councillor (14 years) and have always strived to support the Town. As chair of Cromer Community Association I have secured £60K of grant funding for the upgrade of the Community Centre in Garden Street which is currently taking place. I am helping Cromer Town Football club secure a new home, this will provide up to date facilities for both adult and youth football. In March this year I obtained £20K government funding for a new pocket park in Lynewood Close, new green space for local children to play . As a member of the co-operative movement I am keen to support Credit Unions, Community Led Housing and other projects which promote cooperation. We need Councillors on the District Council who scrutinise and challenge the working of the council, it is currently far too cosy.

John Lee Jnr (C) - Although I'm only 21 years old I have a deep interest in local politics.

I was born, live and work in Cromer and I believe there should be a place for younger voices on the District Council, we are the future of Cromer.

I promise I will work hard to ensure Cromer continues to thrive, while ensuring it retains its unique identity.

I will be a voice for the young but of course I will represent all residents in our quest to make Cromer an even better place to live, through improved business and leisure opportunities.

Andreas Yiasimi (LD)
