Speeds of more than 150mph were recorded as women got the chance to drive super cars and emergency vehicles for charity.

The 2011 Ladies Driving Challenge saw women get behind the wheel of a variety of machines, including tractors, fire engines, a Lotus Evora, a 4x4 and a double decker bus.

Women of all ages took part in the event including a pensioner in her eighties.

The day, held at the former RAF Coltishall today (Saturday), raised thousands of pounds for The Fire Fighters Charity, which supports injured firefighters and their families, and the British Red Cross.

Kate Greeves, 30, who lives near Boundary Road in Norwich, said: 'I had a go at driving everything - the lorry, 4x4, Lotus, the Merc, a hybrid, everything.

'I got up to 150mph in the Lotus Evora, my hands were shaking when I finished. It really was awesome. I've had such a good day, I would do it again in an instant.'

Ms Greeves, who works for Britvic, raised 620 for the charities which will be matched by her employer.

It was the third time the event has been held. In previous years, in 2008 and 2009, more than 24,000 was raised in total.

A final figure for today's event was not yet known but it was thought to be more than 10,000.

Norfolk's chief fire officer Nigel Williams, who was driving some of the women around the course in a Mercedes, said: 'I've been very impressed with their driving skills, they have had a lot of fun and have really enjoyed themselves.

'There's also a safety element to the day about not only being able to drive large and fast vehicles but how to drive them safely. I think the women are getting an appreciation for other vehicles on the road and the skills needed to drive them.'

Sarah Hurren, community fundraiser for the British Red Cross in Norfolk, said: 'It's been absolutely fantastic. The ladies have come out of the vehicles with a massive smile on their faces. It's been brilliant.

'We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has given up their own time and vehicles to support the event. Richard Long in Wymondham kindly stepped in at the last minute to provide vehicles and the fact that people have been so willing to help has been fantastic.'
