Norfolk Fire and Rescue service, which is currently run by the county council, would be taken over by Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Lorne Green, under the changes.

The PCC’s consultation over the fire service’s future ended this month.

In a letter to Mr Green, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said: “I am particularly concerned about the assessment by Norfolk County Council that if the proposals were implemented, we ‘could be facing an almost 20pc reduction in fire engine capacity in rural areas and would impact on our ability to respond to emergencies and would mean that the services could not be resilient’.”

Mr Green said previously that an independent draft business case had shown £10m could be saved in a decade if the service was under his control, with more efficient services and better joint working.
