North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has advised people to avoid contact with the larvae and calls were made on the weekend for the steps leading from the Promenade to the beach to be taped off, to prevent people using them because of the caterpillars on the railings.

A NNDC spokesman said: “In response to public concerns about the caterpillars, we will remove and destroy some of the caterpillars one afternoon/evening in the next few days.

“The caterpillars’ hairs can break off as barbs, causing rashes, skin irritation, headaches and sometimes breathing difficulties.

“We will remove the caterpillars closest to the footpaths and access points used by the public.

“The caterpillars well away from the footpaths and access points will not be removed.”
