Roy, 87, and Audrey Haynes, 84, who were married for more than 60 years, died on June 7.

Retired steel and chemical engineer Mr Haynes was twice mayor of North Walsham, in 1998 and 2003.

The North Norfolk Constituency Labour Party paid tribute to the couple at its monthly meeting on Thursday, June 21.

Executive committee member David Russell, a former North North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) colleague of Mr Haynes', said: 'From a personal perspective I would like to say what a honour and privilege it was to work with the NNDC North Walsham East councillor.

'I always likened Roy to a terrier who never gave up once he got his teeth into something.

'A proposal to demolish the ancient Waxham barn in my Hickling ward did not happen once Roy got hold of it.

'The NNDC 1997/98 year book shows Roy as chairman of the health and works committee, a member of the tourism and leisure committee, and chairman of the publicity sub-committee.

'He also represented the council on the Bacton Gas Terminal environmental liaison committee, and police liaison committee (North Walsham sub-committee) and was first chairman of the North Norfolk Older People's Forum. What a splendid record of service to the community and to the party. Well done and rest in peace, comrade.'

His wife, Cromer town councillor Mary Russell also paid tribute.

She said: 'I was supported by Roy while setting up voluntary support within Cromer and befriending services with Age Concern North Norfolk.

'His friendship, networks and many kindnesses will never be forgotten and allowed me to support others.

'I am sure I am one of many who feel north Norfolk is losing a generation of champions.'

Mrs Haynes died at Glendon House care home in Overstrand at about 2.20am while Mr Hyanes died at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital at about 6am.

The funeral service is at Cromer Crematorium on Friday, July 6 at 3pm.
