Norfolk is being warned to brace itself for strong winds, as a band of wet weather could bring gusts of up to 60mph to the region.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds across the East of England.

The warnings are in place from 6pm today through to 9am on Friday and again between 9am on Sunday to 9am on Monday, September 25.

The warnings state that there is ‘potential for very strong winds’ and: “A slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs or through falling trees and branches. This could also bring the chance of injuries and danger to life.”

It adds that there is also a small chance that some roads and bridges could close: “There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

“There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.”

Phil Garner from Norwich based forecaster Weatherquest said winds would start to feel fresher this afternoon with gusts of around 45mph, before a band of rain and squally winds coming in from the west could bring gusts of 50mph and 55mph to the coast overnight.

He said the winds would increase again over the weekend with the potential to reach speeds of up to 60mph: “There will be another band of rain on Saturday and much heavier rain and stronger winds coming through on Sunday.”
