They were unsung heroes who devoted time and effort to helping others. Now a fitting honour is being made to commemorate the work of Cromer's selfless community champions.

A memory book has been produced in tribute to the dedicated volunteers who have made a significant contribution to the life of the town.

The names of those who have passed away will be recorded on its pages and read out at the annual town meeting in March.

The book was inspired by the death of a number of prominent Cromer Carnival supporters last year.

Carnival chairman Tony Shipp approached the town council with the idea of providing the memory book to honour their contribution.

He said: 'The town would not run without its volunteers, they do not go looking for publicity and the memory book will give some recognition for the work they have done for the town. The town council has had a very positive response to the idea and it is be nice to see something visible in their honour.'

Among the first names to be entered in the book will be carnival stalwarts Austin Fisher, Malcolm McGreadie, Mick Weddup, Philip Bonnett, John Dawes and Ronnie Lake who passed away last year.

Cromer mayor Tim Adams said: 'We have a very active volunteer community in Cromer and they are involved in nearly every aspect of the community. People who come here often say they never been to a town where so many people are supporting different things, there must be an infectious spirit.

'It is important for us to remember those people who have passed away both in years gone by and more recently. The memory book is a nice way to give them some recognition.'

The town council has issued an appeal to find a calligrapher to inscribe names into the memory book. Anyone able to help should email clerk@cromertown.org
