The scheme, which ran over six months, saw students given basic guidelines for growing two of Solana's potato varieties.

At an awards ceremony held at the company's headquarters at Stody Hall Barns, near Holt, Northgate High School, from Dereham, whose project was managed by ex-serviceman Calum MacDonald, took the top trophy for best quality and biggest yield.

Solana UK managing director Craig Stephen, who is planning to make the scheme an annual event, said that schools taking part had also run events to raise awareness and cash for Walking with the Wounded.

He added: 'The aim for next year will be to try and increase the scope of the competition, widen the age range and invite schools to compete from nearby Norwich'.
