A set of historic gates at Overstrand Sports Field which were originally made in Italy have been refurbished.

The gates, which are believed to date from the late 19th century and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, had been showing the effects of severe corrosion with several pieces of the ornate scroll work being lost.

RBS Engineering of Fakenham carried out the works, first dismantling the gates and taking them back to their workshop.

Although the cost of carrying out the work was high, it was agreed unanimously by Overstrand Sports Club committee that the gates were an integral part of the character of the village and needed to be funded. The club’s funds are raised from the car boot which is held on the field, starting May 24, a Rockstock festival, this year planned for July 28, and the bar which is open at cricket matches and on Friday evenings during summer.
