Villagers who worked for months to refurbish their village hall will get a treat when a Harry Potter star re-opens it next week.

Actor Robert Hardy, who played Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter films and starred in All Creatures Great and Small, will mark the re-opening of Lammas village hall on March 28 with an evening of poetry and anecdotes from his stage, screen and television career.

He will also unveil a plaque commemorating his visit and another thanking the Veolia Environmental Trust, who provided a 13,000 grant through the Landfill Communities Fund to support the improvements.

Improvement work to the hall at Lammas near Coltishall took three months to complete, with teams of volunteers from the village decorating the hall from top to bottom, including hand-painted tiles in the toilets.

Local children aged from a few months to 12 years old visited Sticky Earth Caf in Cromer where they painted tiles with their favourite scenes of the village, including horses and cows in the fields, flowers, and an underwater scene of the bottom of the river Bure.

Village hall committee member Tim Curtis said: 'We asked them to think about Lammas and they drew their favourite bits. It really was important to us that we engaged the community. We wanted people to really take it over and have a stake in the hall.'

The building was dilapidated and run down before the refurbishment, with leaking windows, damp plaster and problems with the roof and gutters.

Now it will hold village social events including the Christmas fair and winter socials, and it is open for the use of local groups and individuals.

The fundraiser is set to raise 600 to buy curtains and for maintenance of the hall.
