A grieving mother has called for change of speed limit and a bus warning sign to be placed on the treacherous stretch of country road that claimed the life of her son last year.

Father of one Bill Martin died after his Triumph Thunderbird hit a bus on the North Walsham Road at Gimingham in August 2007.

Now Janet Braund and her daughter-in-law Christine Martin want to see the road's 60mph speed limit reduced to 50mph and a sign put up to alert other divers to the dangers of buses travelling along the road.

They have already written to North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb asking for his support and the Department of Transport asking for their request to be considered.

A petition to back up the campaign is due to be launched within days.

The 58-year-old mother was grief- stricken at the time of the crash and feels the reduction in speed limit could be part of a lasting legacy for Mr Martin.

She said: “Are they waiting for another accident to happen?

“The buses take up most of the road when they come around a bend. I feel that people need to be more aware of what is going to come around the bend and that people should reduce their speed.”

Mrs Braund moved to Norfolk in December 2006 to join her son who had moved to Norfolk with his wife and young daughter Chloe, who is now eight.

The Department of Transport said that they were not considering changing the speed limit on country roads as those drivers had a responsibility to themselves and the average speed on a rural road was 48 mph.

But undeterred, Mrs Braund is determined to press her case.

She said: “I have found it very hard to get on with my life.

“It has just made it so hard. I cannot remember when I last had a good laugh.”

“Doing this would make me feel that I have achieved something.”
