Existing buildings on the site, off Upper Staithe Road, have been demolished to make way for the erection of retirement living housing for the elderly, including 30 apartments, 12 bungalows and car parking.

The plot of disused land had lain dormant for a decade after the abattoir closed more than 10 years ago. And those in favour of the plans said it would be a good use of a derelict site.

Phyllis Eden, the chairman of Stalham Town Council, attended a bricklaying ceremony for the new McCarthy and Stone development.

She said: "This will be a good facility for older people in Stalham who will, hopefully, support businesses and activities in the town."

The scheme will also feature landscaped gardens and high-quality communal facilities including a homeowners' lounge.
