More than a dozen crew members were part of the effort to put out the blaze, which was on the cliffs near Cromer Lighthouse, to the east of the town towards Overstrand.

The firefighters used backpack sprayers and beaters to put out the flames after first being called about the incident at 9.11am today (Sunday, May 26).

A Norfolk Fire and Rescue spokesman said the fire covered an area of about 50 square metres, and two crews from Cromer and Sheringham stations were at the scene.

Eyewitness Fran Whiting, from Ingworth, said the firefighters seemed to be working efficiently to quell the flames.

She said: "We were between Cromer and Overstrand and saw loads of firemen flying along.

"There was lots of smoke, and it looks like it started at the bottom and spread up the cliffs. There were at least 10, probably 15 or more, firemen, and they managed to contain it.

"They did pretty well to get down there quickly."

"There were a couple of areas of flames going on and lots of black."
