The roads of north Norfolk echoed with the low hum of more than 400 motorcycles on Saturday, when a two-mile convoy of Harley Davidsons revved and roared its way along the coast from Fakenham to Sheringham.

Running for nearly three decades, the traditional ride-out attracted crowds in their hundreds, with Harley owners taking part from as far afield as Suffolk and Essex.

Led by Fenlanders Harley Owner's Group (HOG) road captain Neil Sturman, the convoy made its way from Fakenham Racecourse to the town centre, where bikes lined up along the streets for a 'show and shine'.

Flags featuring the Harley Davidson logo were handed out and spectators enjoyed waving at the riders and soaking up the atmosphere.

As well as the rally, there was also a farmers' market, live music and a barbecue laid on by Papworth's Butchers.

Liam O'Sullivan, who owns the Gallery Bistro on the market place and helps organise the rally, said the event was a firm favourite on the town calendar and also helped to raise money for charity.

Rain meant a late arrival at Sheringham, but crowds were happy to wait and gave the riders and their 35-strong team of outriders a warm welcome as they made their way past the station to the town clock.

The traditional format, which usually sees bikes lining the streets from the town centre to the sea front had to be changed to accommodate the sinkhole in the high street and numbers were slightly down on last year, but Lobster pub landlord Graham Deans, who is Sheringham Carnival events manager, said the ride-out, which started with a group of less than 50 Harley owners, had been a big success.

"To see 400 Harley Davidsons is quite a spectacle and I think what makes it such a big attraction is that no two bikes are the same and they are beautifully maintained," he said.

Mr Deans, who was helped on Saturday by a team of 26 volunteers, added that this year's carnival, which kicks off next weekend with the traditional car boot sale, promised to be bigger and better than ever.

"It's going to be amazing," he said. "Even though we have got the sinkhole, we have all been working very hard to make sure there's the absolute minimum amount of disruption and all the events will go ahead as usual."
