A huge expansion at a Norfolk recycling plant looks set to be turned down by councillors.

Carl Bird Ltd wants to increase annual throughput at the site in Old Yarmouth Road, near North Walsham, from 75,000 to 90,000 tonnes.

The plans will be considered by Norfolk County Council's planning (regulatory) committee at County Hall in Norwich on Friday, March 23.

Twenty-eight letters of support were received by the council along with a 94-name petition from the applicant.

However, a report published ahead of the meeting has recommended refusal of the plans because it would lead to the loss of two hectares of agricultural land within the open countryside. It is also contrary to Norfolk Minerals and Waste Development Framework core strategy policy which says waste sites should be developed on sites already in waste management use.

Carl Bird did not wish to comment, but said: 'Let's see what happens tomorrow.'
