Drivers heading into a north Norfolk town are facing miles-long queues after the closure of a nearby B-road for emergency water works.

The A149 into Cromer is experiencing twice the normal volume of traffic into the town due to the closure of the B1436 from Felbrigg to Roughton.

Tim Adams, a Cromer town councillor, said: “We're probably dealing with double the volume of traffic we normally do on the A149.

“People don't usually appreciate but the B-road deals with as much traffic as an A-road.”

In a tweet posted at 12.37pm, Cromer Town Council (CTC) said: “Please be aware.

“The B1436 from Felbrigg through to Roughton is currently closed to an emergency repair to a utility cover and frame.

“We will receive an update later this afternoon on any timescales for the repair.”

An Anglian Water spokesman said: “Our teams have now completed work to a damaged manhole cover on the B1436 Chapel Road near Roughton.

“Our teams were notified of the damage to the road surface over the weekend and an emergency closure was put in place to ensure the health and safety of local residents.

“In order to minimise disruption, a one-day closure was in place to ensure the work was completed as quickly and as safely as possible. The work to repair the road surface has now been completed and we anticipate the closure to be lifted by 5pm this evening.”

Updates to follow.
