A dog is feared to have drowned today in the sea off Sheringham after rescue efforts were scuppered by dense mist.

Sheringham Lifeboat’s The Oddfellows was launched at about 11.30am.

A lifeboat spokesman said: “The Sheringham Lifeboat was tasked by Humber Coastguard to undertake a search for a dog seen to be entering the sea just east of the Two Lifeboats Hotel at Sheringham seafront at about the time of low water and not seen to return.

“Visibility was reduced to about 30 metres in places and the lifeboat undertook several search patterns as well as a shoreline search but nothing was found.”

Helmsman was David Hagan and the crewmen were Chris Taylor, Jamie Crisp and Jim Mack. The tractor driver was Mark Herring and the shorehelpers were Ian Roper, Paul Brennan, Chris Wright and Paul Wheatland.

The lifeboat returned to station and was rehoused and ready for service at 1pm.
