New community hub for Holt moves closer after plans go on show

Residents were given the chance to see more detailed plans at a presentation at the new church rooms at St Andrew's Church on Thursday, March 8.

Holt Town Council plans to move the TIC from the Market Place to Nelson House in White Lion Street, which will become a hub for activities and services.

The town council will also take over the running of the TIC from North Norfolk District Council (NNDC).

Maggie Prior, mayor of Holt and chairman of the town council, said: 'It's all happening so quickly now. We have started work on Nelson House and we plan to take over the TIC in May, so we have to have it finished by then. This would have the added value of opening the TIC each weekday.'

She said the council wanted to save the historic grade 2 listed Nelson House from any further deterioration and bring it back to life as a key feature in the town centre, while preserving the integrity of the building.

'It's a win-win situation for both councils,' she added.

The authority is working with the Holt Society on a central display/ information area at the new building, and its three floors also offer archiving space and storage for the society's large collection of exhibits.

Plans also include using the separate room at the building as a meeting room for community groups. There would also be space for private conversations between the clerk and members of the public.

Nelson House has previously been used for office purposes, but has stood empty for many years.

It's proposed that NNDC offers a capital grant of £100,000 towards the costs with the town council committed to operating the TIC for five years.

The building has been offered for sale at £377,000 and it is anticipated this will be paid for with a government loan.

Comments on the plans may also be returned to Holt Town Council during the consultation period, which closes at 12pm on Friday, March 16.
