A former deputy headmaster and “inspiring” teacher at Sheringham High School has died aged 84.

Bob Crawley, who was born in the East End of London and lived in Essex during his childhood, moved to Norfolk in the 1950s spending the rest of his life in the place which he loved.

On leaving school in 1939, Mr Crawley served as a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean beginning his long and prestigious career as a teacher when the war ended.

He married his wife Penny in 1947 and the pair lived in Essex where he already started dabbling in local politics as a representative on Dagenham Borough Council.

They moved to High Kelling in the 1950s when he took up a teaching post at Sheringham high, where he subsequently became deputy head.

The couple later built a house in Hunworth, from local Norfolk materials crafting a beautiful garden which was his pride and joy. Rekindling his earlier involvement with local authorities, Mr Crawley joined Hunworth and Stody Parish Council.

He and his wife were married for 56 years until she died over two years ago.

Mr Crawley, who is survived by his two brothers, Jack and Jim, died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn on February 12. A funeral was held at St Lawrence Church, Hunworth on February 25.
