Cromer food fans will have to wait until next week to see dishes from the menu of one of the town’s top eateries being cooked up on national TV, after producers at the BBC’s One Show decided on a last-minute line-up change.

Chefs Paul Harvey and Jamie Hood, from the seafront Cliftonville Hotel, last week spent hours filming with a crew from the popular BBC One magazine show, for a spot that was due to be aired on Thursday of this week.

The crew, who spent two days in the town, also took a boat trip with eighth generation fisherman John Davies as part of a feature on the journey of Cromer’s famous crab - from ‘sea to fork’.

Mr Harvey, who is executive chef for the Cliftonville’s three restaurants, including the 60-seat Bolton’s Bistro, said the hotel served up more than 150 locally-caught crabs and up to 40 lobsters a week during high season, with diners treated to dishes ranging from crab claw tagliatelle and lobster thermidor, to crab with lime, chilli and ginger and baked crab in garlic butter.

“Cromer crab has fantastic texture and quality,” he said. “The meat is very sweet and it is great that you can get it locally.”

The former Sheringham High School student, who started work at the Cliftonville as a second chef nearly 20 years ago, added: “Cromer is a lovely place, the people are friendly and, with fantastic views of the pier and fresh crab on your doorstep, what more could you want?”

Cliftonville manager Richard Howard, who is also a member of Cromer Chamber of Commerce, said that staff were disappointed when the One Show feature wasn’t screened.

“We were looking forward to seeing it, but the producers called to say there had been a change to the show and it should be aired next week,” he said. “But there has been a lot of local interest from people who heard about it and, bookings-wise, the weekend is looking good.”
