North Norfolk craft enthusiasts have created a clutch of more than 250 knitted chicks, which will be sold over Easter to raise money for children and young people living with cancer.
The cute characters, which have a chocolate egg centre, have been made by knitting groups and individuals from all over the area in response to an appeal organised by Morrisons, Cromer, as part of three-year, £10 million partnership between the supermarket giant and children's cancer charity Clic Sargent.
Kate Davis, who is north Norfolk area organiser for Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers, said group members at Cromer and Sheringham had managed to complete more than 200 chicks, also rustling up a further 50 for Smile Train, which supports children born with a cleft lip and palate.
'We always have a terrific response to appeals,' she added. 'There is a big social element to knitting and, as well as a being a way of using the talents of our members, knitting for charity is a wonderfully therapeutic way of helping others.'
Also helping out were Ellen Preston, 87, who made 90 chicks with the help of two friends, Sheringham Knitters and Stitchers member Heather Oliver, 64, who made 70 chicks, and members of a new craft cafe launched at Morrisons Cromer by retired head teacher and Cromer Parochial Church Council member Jackie Austin a few weeks ago.
Simon Clipsom, who has helped raise more than £300,000 for charity through his work as community champion at the Cromer Road store - including more than £20,0000 for Clic Sargent - said he had been 'overwhelmed' by the response to the appeal.
'I didn't realise just how popular the chicks would be and we raised nearly £200 in less than a week,' he explained. 'People have been so generous with their time, giving up hundreds of hours to help, which is just incredible.'
The chicks are on sale for £3 each, or two for £5, at Morrisons, Cromer, with all proceeds going to Clic Sargent, which provides support for children and young people with cancer.
The next meeting of Cromer Crafts2Share group, which runs activities ranging from card making, to knitting and crochet, will be at Morrisons' cafe on April 29 from 9.30-11.30am. To find out more about Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers, visit www.norfolkknitters.co.uk
