Mr Holley tweeted: “Quite a bit of frozen slush and fresh snow on some roads driving into Norwich this morning. A gritting nightmare, given frequent showers - some of which are sleet/rain which serve to wash grit off the roads - followed by clear spells allowing things to freeze.”

He said temperatures were -2.4C at Santon Downham, -1.7C in Marham, -0.5C in Tibenham, 1.5C in Weybourne and 2.7C in Cromer.

Temperatures are due to rise to 4C on the coast and 2C inland this afternoon, which could feature some sunshine.

The Met Office warning said: “Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with some journey times taking longer.

“There will probably be icy stretches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths with some injuries from slips trips and falls.”
