The remnants of a magnificent former hotel in north Norfolk have finally been claimed by coastal erosion.

The Overstrand Hotel stood looking over the sea until it burned to the ground in 1947.

As crews battled to put out the blaze, the force of the jets tore the building apart.

Now, the final foundations of the huge hotel have slipped down the cliff face and onto the west beach of Cromer.

Residents who had been watching the foundations crumble commented that the erosion was “frightening”.

A spokesman for the North Norfolk District Council said: “We are well aware the foundations have been moving down the cliff gradually for the last 40 years or so.

“We monitor them and have done so for a long time but do not intend to remove them as this could create destabilisation of the cliff. They are also not a major problem.

“The brickwork has moved down the slope with the recent wet weather. We will continue to monitor.

“We have no immediate concerns as the brickwork has been slowly doing this for a long period of time.”
