A north Norfolk chess club is celebrating, after four of its members defied the odds to bag a regional title.
David Owen, Jonathan Reeve, Russell Reeve and Heather Wells, represented Aylsham Chess Club in the East Anglian Chess Union team championships, competing against much higher-ranked teams from Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire in the team 500 section of the competition.
The section is for teams with a combined grade of up to 500 but, despite being outgraded, the Aylsham players completed the tournament without losing a game, with Heather Wells scoring maximum points.
The club, which meets on Monday evenings from September to June at Aylsham Ex-service and Social Club, in Hungate Street, is open to new players. For more information, or to join, contact club secretary David Owen on 01263 731327 or email davidowen364@btinternet.com
