People with dementia and their carers will have a chance to help shape future health and care services, at a focus day being held at Sheringham's Lighthouse Church on Saturday.

Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community (DFC), which has been praised by Age UK for its work in making public buildings accessible to people with memory problems, has teamed up with GP practices at Sheringham, Holt and Cromer to organise an event aimed at gaining an understanding of what support is being accessed by people with dementia, and identifying gaps in services.

The focus day, which has been funded by a £4,000 Tesco Bags of Help grant, will give those living with dementia a chance to share their views.

The event will also include stands run by organisations ranging from the Alzheimer's Society and Norfolk Carers Matter, to Age Concern North Norfolk and Holt Dementia Support Group.

Retired nurse practitioner Janet Eastwood, who is Sheringham DFC group chairman, said the event would give people with dementia and care providers an opportunity to exchange information.

'We felt the most important thing was to find out what people wanted from dementia services, to discover what matters to them and to identify what works well and what needs to be improved,' she explained.

Information gathered at the event will be relayed back to North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group, with dementia organisations running stands also encouraged to feed back their findings.

'There is currently a lot of duplication of services, so we want to make sure the resources we have got are used in the most efficient and effective way and, ultimately, improve services for people with dementia,' Mrs Eastwood added.

The focus day will run on Saturday from 10am-1pm at the Lighthouse Church, Cromer Road. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. For more information, or to book a place, phone 07905 292897, email: secretarysdfc@gmail.com or visit the Sheringham DFC Facebook page
