Calls have been made for steps leading from the Promenade to the beach in Cromer to be taped off to prevent people using them because of dangerous caterpillars that have covered the railings.

It comes after north Norfolk residents were warned to avoid the brown-tail moth caterpillars, which are nesting along the coast, as well as in communities including Cromer and Bacton.

The caterpillars’ hairs can break off as barbs, causing rashes, skin irritation, headaches and sometimes breathing difficulties.

North Norfolk District Council has posted notices on the Promenade and is advising people to avoid contact with the larvae.

But former naturalist John Marney wants more to be done.

He said: “There should be a tape at the top and bottom of the steps because the railings are covered in caterpillars.”

If there is any accidental contact, members of the public should wash their hands in soapy water and clean their eyes with eyewash.
