ABUSY road at North Walsham will be shut for six weeks, in two phases, this summer.

The closure is for pathway and mini-roundabout island improvements on Grammar School Road.

It will start on July 21 and involve a five-mile diversion via the bypass, Bengate and Old Yarmouth Road.

The stretch from the bypass traffic lights to the roundabout will be shut for the first three weeks, followed by the section between the roundabout and Bank Loke.

Norfolk County Council says the scheme has been devised in two phases to remove the need to shut down the main traffic lights and set up a temporary five-way set which “would cause severe disruption.”

However, a temporary 40mph limit and three-way lights will be set up at the Bengate junction with the bypass and Old Yarmouth Road to increase safety.

There would also occasionally be two-way lights in off-peak hours on Kings Arms Street, and near Bank Loke.

It is planned to resurface Grammar School Road in the last week of August, which will involve closures between 6pm-11pm, when it is also hoped to build the new access to the redevelopment of the old tyre depot.
