The Blickling Estate has won a national award for innovation in how they present their collections to visitors.
The estate won the National Trust’s ‘Creativity with Collections’ award last Thursday.
The team won the award thanks to their conversation-led experience, which encourages visitors to engage in the history and upkeep of the site.
Throughout 2017, the team at the estate encouraged visitors to see what happens behind the scenes, holding open talks every Tuesday, known as ‘Conservation Tuesday’ on how the housekeeping and preservation is done at the estate.
The site was also open for a total of 363 in 2017.
Blickling also hosted tours of previously private areas on these days, including the hall’s attic.
Paul Forecast, regional director for NT East of England said: “This project ticked both these boxes by allowing visitors to come into the house in the winter and to be able to see you cleaning and caring for the collection.
“I am so pleased that the reaction of your visitors has been so positive and that your efforts have been recognised in a tough category.”
A new visitor entrance was also used on Conservation Tuesday mixing audio and visual interpretation to make the collections more accessible to the public.
Pop-up conversation stations also gave more in depth looks into how to care for leather, how to clean ceramic collections, and so on.
There were also volunteer led demonstrations, as well as objects on offer for the visitors to handle.
In 2018 Blickling has continued to encourage visitors to visit 363 days a year, with varied routes around the house.
The house is open daily from 10.30am to 3pm until March 18, and then from 12pm to 5pm from March 19.
Last entry to the house is an hour before it closes.
Blickling’s gardens and parkland are also open all year round.
