The North Walsham-based Benjamin Foundation will reach out to thousands of Norwich City fans - and potential benefactors - when its name is emblazoned on Canaries shirts for a home game.

The charity triumphed over four other good causes to win the Community Chest Challenge and the coveted top prize of full sponsorship for a Norwich City match.

Earlier this month, the EDP teamed up with Canaries' sponsors, Aviva, and asked readers to collect tokens for their chosen local charity to help it win priceless exposure and support.

The Benjamin Foundation captured almost a third of the vote and stormed to victory, to the real surprise and delight of its founder and chief executive, Richard Draper.

He set up the charity in 1992 in honour of his son, Ben, who died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 17 and has gone on to help hundreds of youngsters coping with bereavement, abuse or living on their own after being brought up in care.

“We are absolutely amazed at winning this initiative - for a local Norfolk charity to get this level of recognition is phenomenal,” he said.

“We would like to give enormous thanks to people who made such an effort to collect tokens for The Benjamin Foundation, and we know there were many.

“ Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Sainsbury's in North Walsham who made a strong collective effort to encourage staff and shoppers to collect tokens for our wonderful charity.”

The Benjamin Foundation will have its branding on the Norwich City shirts for the Doncaster game on October 25. It will also have the use of the Aviva executive box for the match, a match day collection among the fans and the proceeds of an auction of the player's shirts after the game.
