People in Norfolk have been warned to be careful when answering calls coming from one seaside town.
New research has identified the UK area codes most likely to be linked with scams.
And Cromer's 01263 area code has ranked as cold callers' third-favourite haunt.
The study, completed by Phonely, was carried out using all-time data from who-called.co.uk.
Scam reports were cross-referenced against the total number of searches for area codes to identify the most dodgy.
A total of 518,543 people who were worried about the legitimacy of a call looked up phone numbers associated with Cromer.
More than 50,500 scam reports were then made, meaning 9.75pc of investigated calls coming from Cromer's area code were tied to scammers.
Con artists posing as members of the Barclays Fraud Department previously called people in Cromer and Trunch to ask for their PIN numbers.
Fraudsters pretending to be police officers is another popular phone scam in north Norfolk.
Blandford Forum, a town in Dorset with the area code 01258, is the scammers' overall favourite to use, according to the data.
A staggering 509,370 scam reports were made from 1,331,898 searches, meaning 38.24pc of all calls coming from the area code were tied to scammers.
Second was Faringdon, which has the area code 01367.
A total of 23,309 reports from 217,149 searches were made, meaning 10.73pc of all calls outbound from the town were tied to dodgy dealings.
Bryn Thompson, marketing director at Phonely, says local-looking numbers are frequently used by fraudsters to make calls appear more legitimate.
"Scammers often use local or regional-looking numbers to make you less likely to dismiss the call outright," he said.
"If you see an unfamiliar code that appears to be from a small town near you, there's an instinct to think it might be a neighbour, a tradesperson, or a local business."
