Alcohol-related deaths in Norfolk remain significantly higher than before the Covid pandemic, according to new figures.
Statistics released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that 124 alcohol-specific deaths were recorded in the county in 2024.
These are deaths caused entirely by alcohol, such as alcoholic liver disease.
In addition, a further 401 Norfolk deaths were classed as alcohol-related, meaning alcohol was a contributing factor.
Together, the figures highlight the continued and widespread impact of alcohol on public health across Norfolk, with mortality levels still well above those seen before the pandemic.
The figures were highlighted by Rehab 4 Addiction, a UK-based addiction treatment and alcohol detox advisory service.
Its chief executive, Oliver Clark, said the data should be seen as a warning.
“These figures show a small step in the right direction, but alcohol harm in Norfolk is still far higher than it was before the pandemic,” he said.
“Behind every statistic is a real person, a family and a community coping with a loss that, in many cases, could have been prevented.”
He stressed that struggling to reduce alcohol consumption alone should not be viewed as a personal failing.
The charity says the latest figures underline the importance of early intervention, with many alcohol-related deaths considered preventable if help is accessed in time.
