A BAFTA-winning actress has spoken warmly of her connection to Norfolk, and in particular to the seaside town of Sheringham.

Suranne Jones, who became president of Sheringham Little Theatre in February 2024, said: “I love Sheringham, I love Norfolk, I love the people here; I feel part of the community.

“This theatre has a pull on me because it’s 160 seats; it’s really intimate.

"I started in community theatre drama groups so I feel having worked my way through the industry, I can come here and say, ‘Right, here’s the knowledge I’ve got, this is what we should be doing.’”

“I’m not really good at being famous,” she said.

“I’m equally happy down the beach, just kind of hiding, with an ice cream and a cap on.”

Since taking on the honorary role, she has supported a range of initiatives, including a one-act playwriting competition open to people living in Norfolk.

The two winning works, On the Edge by Robert White and Shamble by Martha Allison, will be performed in staged readings by the theatre’s repertory actors on Sunday, August 10.

The following day she will host a Q&A session for aspiring actors, and on August 17 The Little Theatre Fundraising Show will return for a night of show-stopping entertainment including raffle prizes donated by the actor.

The TV star rose to fame as Karen McDonald in Coronation Street and has starred in Vigil, Gentleman Jack and Doctor Foster, winning a BAFTA for the latter.

She will soon be seen as the prime minister in upcoming Netflix political thriller Hostage, while a new series of Vigil is also on the way.
