Concerns are growing over a "super slippery" ramp which is deterring people from visiting a Blue Flag beach in north Norfolk.

The ramp, which is used to access East Runton Beach and launch fishing boats, has been the site of several accidents, including a broken leg and falls involving children and elderly people.

A Facebook post warning of the hazard has reignited calls for action.

In the post, a woman described how an elderly couple fell on the slope in front of her, prompting her and others to rush to help.

“The area is super, super slippery,” she wrote.

"To the left is the darker anti-slip path, but even that can get slippy - made worse by the heat and lots of dry sand."

Dozens of people shared similar stories.

Michelle Russell Wray said: “I broke my leg and a bone in my foot on that gangway five years ago and nothing’s changed since."

Others said they no longer visit the beach due to the risk.

Wooden stairs that offer a safer route have reportedly been closed off since a recent storm, leaving many feeling they have no safe way down.

Mike Ashwell, who lives locally, said: "I realise that money is tight for all council departments right now, but public safety is paramount and where there is a dangerous area, such as our beach slope, it must be made safe without delay."

A spokeswoman for North Norfolk District Council said: "The council has received a complaint about the ramp that leads onto the beach at East Runton being slippery and replied to find out more information about the specific area which they are concerned about.

"The lower section of the ramp has a handrail and there are two alternative routes down to the beach which avoid this area."

The spokeswoman added that when the RNLI lifeguards are back on duty - from July 12 - they will sweep the area daily to remove any wind-blown sand.
