A self-service kayak business has been given the green light to reopen after being shut down due to health and safety concerns.

Kayakomat, a Swedish company that operates 24/7 kayak rental stations across Europe, had to pause operations on Sheringham promenade in April after North Norfolk District Council questioned its safety measures.

The move followed the suspension of the town's RNLI operations in February due to cliff instability behind the lifeboat station.

Sam Richmond, the operator of the Sheringham franchise, said: “We complied by shutting it down temporarily and then out of the blue we got a termination.

"I’d spent quite a bit of money shipping the kayaks and station over from Sweden but once I got over the frustration, I talked to the council and asked how they would feel if we put some staff in charge of the station.

"It took them two months, but they said yes, so I have uprooted my life from Portsmouth and I’m now living in Sheringham for the summer.”

Previously, customers were only going to get an online safety briefing.

Mr Richmond will now be on-site daily, offering in-person safety briefings and advice about the local nautical conditions, such as the prevailing winds, currents and reefs.

"As a result, permission has been granted for them to operate on the site in Sheringham.”

The unit will be open during the beach lifeguarding hours of 10am to 6pm and will close if the red flags are raised due to unsafe conditions.

Kayakomat will officially relaunch in Sheringham on Saturday, June 21. Hire starts at £29 for two hours for a single kayak.

It had a soft launch at the weekend.
