Barclays is set to close its branch in Sheringham next month.

The bank has announced it will close the north Norfolk town’s High Street branch on February 21 due to fewer customers using the branch.

It comes as Barclays closed 157 branches across the UK last year and is set to shut at least another 77 throughout 2024 and 2025.

However, the bank has said the Sheringham branch will not close until a deposit service in the town is in place.

The deposit service has been recommended by LINK – the UK’s cash machine network.

Barclays hopes to open a Barclays Local – a cashless service where customers will be able to access in-person support such as help with digital banking, financial reviews, balances checks transfers and bill payments.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, with the majority of people preferring to bank online, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

“This is reflected at Sheringham, where we are delivering new ways to support our customers and the community with options for those who need in-person services.

“In Sheringham we plan to open a Barclays Local – a cashless banking site where customers can meet a colleague face-to-face for banking support, as they would in a branch and without the need to travel.

“We are currently working with the local community to identify a suitable location and will announce details once confirmed.”

Barclays said it does not intend to make any redundancies as a direct result of the branch closure.

It said the move comes as just 28 customers use the branch regularly as the only way to do their banking, and 90pc of customers at the branch now bank via its app, online or by phone.

After the closure, the nearest Barclays branch to Sheringham will be 27 miles away in Norwich (St Stephens Street).
