A treasured tearoom in the heart of a north Norfolk market town has been taken over by the owner of an award-winning restaurant.

The Folly Tearoom in Holt is reopening this Friday (December 22) after being closed since the end of September.

The Hoppers Yard tearoom's newest tenant is chef Paul Rogers, who owns The Snug Café and Bistro in the nearby Lees Yard.

It will still be known as The Folly Tearoom, continuing to offer vintage afternoon teas and light lunches.

However, Mr Rogers plans to open its garden in the evenings during the summer months, offering alfresco dining with tapas-style small plates cooked on an outdoor chargrill and pizza oven.

“I think we can make a real success of it,” Mr Rogers said ahead of opening this week.

“When I saw the tearoom was looking for a new tenant it was a no-brainer for me because of its location and reputation.

“The Snug and Folly will really complement each other. The Snug is cosy in the autumn and winter, but only has three tables outside - whereas The Folly has a beautiful garden, which will be packed out in the spring and summer.

“I want to open the garden in the evenings over the summer and serve cocktails, beers and wines, as well as small plates cooked on the charcoal of a chargrill with beautiful smoky flavours.”

The Folly Tearoom and Hoppers Yard has been owned by Judith West since 2010.

The previous tenants ran the tearoom for three years before stepping away earlier this year.

The Snug serves traditional British dishes with a Middle Eastern and Mediterranean twist.

It won a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award earlier this year for receiving excellent reviews - placing it in the top 10pc of all businesses on the platform.
