Barclays has pushed back the closure of its last remaining branch in north Norfolk.

The banking said earlier in November that its Sheringham High Street branch would shut on February 21 next year.

But now, councillor Liz Withington, who represents Sheringham North at North Norfolk District Council, says the bank has agreed to delay the closure - which could be "up until November 2024".

She said: “Following a very successful and productive meeting with directors at Barclays on Friday (November 24), we are pleased to announce the closure of Barclays has been delayed from February and could be up until November 2024.

“Although this gives us more time, it does not resolve the issues which will negatively impact our community."

The planned closure means Barclays will no longer operate branches in north Norfolk as the bank is also closing its Hoveton branch on December 1 this year.

Barclays said the decision was made because fewer customers are using the branches, with many doing their banking via its app, online and by phone.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, with the majority of people preferring to bank online, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

"This is reflected at Sheringham, where we are delivering new ways to support our customers and the community with options for those who need in-person services.

“In Sheringham we plan to open a Barclays Local – a cashless banking site where customers can meet a colleague face-to-face for banking support, as they would in a branch and without the need to travel.

"We are currently working with the local community to identify a suitable location and will announce details once confirmed.”

The Sheringham closure is part of a wide-reaching withdrawal of the banking giant from Norfolk, where it was partly founded as Gurney's Bank in 1770.

Gurney's - founded by a family of the same name - united with 11 other banks to form Barclays and Co in 1896.

Among Barclays' other recent and coming branch closures are Fakenham on October 6, Norwich's Whitefriars on October 27, Hoveton - planned for December 1, and Dereham - planned for February 15 next year.
