A new playground is set to be built in Sheringham.

North Norfolk District Council has allocated £65,000 for new outdoor equipment at The Leas play park on the town's seafront.

The playground's current equipment has deteriorated over the years after being exposed to the elements at the coast.

The new playground is expected to be built by next summer, subject to planning permission.

It will be in keeping with Sheringham’s “plastic-free” ethos, with the equipment being made from recycled plastic and marine waste.

Liz Withington, Sheringham North councillor and portfolio holder for community, leisure and outreach at North Norfolk District Council, has been working to secure funding for the Leas play park since 2019.

“It brings me great joy,” she said at full council on Wednesday (November 22).

“This play park has been very sad for a considerable time.

“It has suffered terribly because of its location. It has a very hostile climate on the seafront.

“We are down now to one climbing frame left - it is really a very sad state of affairs.

“It’s one that we’ve been trying to address for some time and I’m really pleased now that as we’re developing the quality of life strategy further we’re looking to put this money into the park.

"It will be a big asset for the town both economically in terms of tourism and for the health and wellbeing of residents.”
