Barclays bank is closing its last remaining branch in north Norfolk.

The bank in Sheringham High Street is set to close on February 21 next year.

It means Barclays will no longer operate branches in north Norfolk following the announcement earlier this year that the bank would also be closing its Hoveton branch on December 1.

Barclays said the decision was made because fewer customers use the branch, with many doing their banking via its app, online and by phone.

Barclays said: “Back when we opened this branch, visiting us in person was one of the only ways to do your banking.

“Now, as there are lots of ways to manage your money without even leaving your home, we’re seeing many customers choosing to bank using our app, and online or telephone banking.

“This has had a big impact on the number of customers coming in to see us.”

It said just 28 customers use the branch regularly as their only way to do their banking, with 90pc of people who use the branch also banking on the app, online and by phone.

North Norfolk’s MP Duncan Baker said news of the closure is “devastating”.

“I’m furious that yet again the banks care so little about our rural communities and have decided to shut the Sheringham branch,” he said.

“I have given my views to try and stop this closure and am even more cross that it will be the last Barclays branch in north Norfolk to shut.

“All the normal reasons for closure were given. Declining footfall and changing banking habits. I told Barclays that this is an older resident population with a vibrant trading high street.

“The closure is simply unwarranted and will be a hammer blow to our community. Many completely rely on the branch.”

Barclays will replace the branch with a 'Barclays Local' banking service, which will be open in Sheringham three days a week.
