The Aylsham Show will be handing out £20,000 to Norfolk community groups, charities and good causes following this summer's "fantastic" event.

Thousands of people crowded onto the Blickling estate for one of the country’s largest one-day agricultural shows, which was staged on August bank holiday Monday.

Show president and mid-Norfolk farmer Roger Long said the charitable proceeds will be presented at the Aylsham Agricultural Show Association’s (AASA's) annual meeting on January 15.

Grant applications from local organisations must be submitted by November 10.

Since June 1946, when the first event was held on the town’s Recreation Ground, the Aylsham Show has raised more than £1m for local good causes.

Many of the groups which have received funding over the years took part in this summer's grand ring parade celebrating 75 years of Aylsham Shows.

At the latest council meeting, Mr Long told 35 members of his "enormous gratitude" for all who helped to stage the show.

“It was a great success and another highlight was seeing a packed ringside watch the grand ring attractions," he said. "And a record number of children took part in the sack races and tug-of-war."

The AASA distributed £15,000 earlier this year to 36 groups.

The latest show, which cost almost £250,000 to stage, recorded a surplus - partly thanks to record sponsorship of £57,000.

Other highlights included livestock entries with 220 sheep, 130 cattle and 50 goats, said co-ordinator Rob Norman.

A revised showground layout with new zones promoting local food production and two countryside rings attracted large numbers of spectators, the meeting was told.

The eve-of-show dance, attended by 520 members and guests, had been another great success.

David Hitcham, treasurer and administrator, said that there had also been record support from trade stands.
