Part of a busy road has been closed due to emergency gas works - limited bus services into a town centre.

A short stretch of Gashouse Hill in Aylsham is now off-limits to traffic and drivers have been told it is not likely to reopen until October 4.

Gas company Cadent is carrying out the works, which started today (Monday, September 25).

Norfolk County Council said road users should use a diversion around the open part of Gashouse Hill, Cromer Road and Bure Way.

Sanders Coaches said due to the works the firm’s buses could not service Aylsham Market Place, Gashouse Hill or Dunkirk.

Sanders said: “We can only serve stops along Norwich Road as far as Tesco, where buses will divert back to the A140. Apologies for any inconvenience.”

The firm advised Aylsham High School students to use bus stops on Burgh Road near the BP Garage instead.

A Cadent spokesman said: “We have two jobs happening in this location – we have a team replacing some essential gas pressure equipment and we are also investigating the source of a reported smell of gas close by. Everything is under control.

"Unfortunately, it’s not possible to keep the road open and maintain a safe work area. This is why, for around a week, there is a diversion in place. We appreciate everyone’s patience while we complete this work.

"It’s also important to stress that, if anyone smells gas – nearby or anywhere – always act immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Please don’t dismiss it as being related to this work – it may not be and needs to be checked. All calls are recorded and may be monitored.”

Gashouse Hill is so named because it was once the site of a big gas production facility.
