North Norfolk 1940s event in Sheringham and Holt 2023

North Norfolk Railway's renamed Steam Back to The Forties was hosted at Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt stations.

With the era's music blaring, steam trains chugging along, and children offering shoe-shining services, the "camaraderie" and "spirit of the era" were celebrated.

Graham Hukins, North Norfolk Railway's commercial manager, said: “It has been a very friendly and atmospheric event celebrating the period of camaraderie and team spirit, within the essence of the era. 

"New for this year we had horse displays which went down really well at Holt, music at all three stations, a Lancaster flypast on both days, cooking on rations sessions from the ministry of food."

Over the two days, the railway had more than 5,000 passengers with an expected additional 20,000 people in the town.

Mr Hukins said: "We are really proud to play our part in assisting the local tourism economy, with a hugely well-attended and supported event, which is never more amply demonstrated by this weekend's turnout.

"On the train we have had over 5,000 visitors, which is just amazing as the rail is a huge piece of British history, most guests in period dress, all helped in evoking the flavour of the 1940s."

The mayor of Sheringham, Peter Ratcliffe, said the event was a great success and crowds were undeterred by the grey skies on the Sunday.

He said: “It has been a really great event, we are so grateful for the many people coming to the town.

"It is a wonderful occasion which has been brilliantly supported. 

"I want to offer a special thanks to the Sheringham Carnival Association who have gone to tremendous lengths to make sure the event ran smoothly, as well as all the other organisers and attendees, just brilliant."
