Shopping in Aylsham will be at the core of an upcoming local history day.

The town’s heritage centre, history society, archives and Roman project have joined forces to bring the event to the town hall in Market Place on Saturday, September 16 from 9.30am-3.30pm.

Jayne Andrew, Aylsham Heritage Centre’s learning officer, said: “We will be presenting information and photographs about the shops which used to be in the town.

“Take a wander down memory lane back to the times of handwritten receipts, counter service and no online shopping.

“Films about the history of the town will be shown throughout the morning, including a fascinating film showing the aftermath of the collapse of the North Norfolk Supply stores.

“The town archivist will be with us so if you have any old documents that you struggle to decipher, such as a deed or old document, then bring it along and she would be more than happy to help.

"The Roman project will be on hand to update us with what has been discovered in the town and also to explore how Romans traded.”

The heritage centre’s current display of pocket diaries spanning decades and continents is ongoing until October.
