He has been everything from a Star Wars captain to a pirate ship quartermaster, but now Steve Speirs is heading to the Norfolk coast for a far different role.

Mr Speirs will appear at Sheringham Little Theatre for a one-act comedy called I am Hamlet - thanks to the opportunity to work with an old friend.

The Welsh actor was invited to the venue to put on the play of his choice by the theatre's director, Debbie Thompson.

The two got to know each other studying drama at Loughborough University in the 1980s. Mr Speirs cast Mrs Thompson as principal boy in the panto he was directing.

Mr Speirs said: “We go back a long way and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to come to Sheringham and work with Debbie.

"I’ve got a pretty busy schedule but the stars aligned nicely to enable me to do this. I’ve never been to Sheringham but I’ve seen pictures of it and it looks wonderful.

"I’m in love with it already and I am really looking forward to coming.”

Mr Speirs' many screen roles have included Captain Tarpals in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and a quartermaster in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

I am Hamlet is about an audition for the lead role in the Shakespeare tragedy.

Mr Speirs said: “The play is a two-hander and it’s incredibly funny, with plot twists all the way through it to keep the audience guessing.

"Afterwards, there will be a question-and-answer session in which further plot twists will be revealed.”
