As the curtain goes up on Sheringham Little Theatre’s Easter youth musical, director Debbie Thompson updates on what’s happening at the venue in her monthly column.

There’s plenty of monkey business going on at the Little Theatre this week!

The arrival of Easter puts a spring in people’s step as it signals a time of post-winter rebirth.

And no more so than at our venue which hosts its annual youth musical at this time of year.

If you’ve heard wild animal noises coming from the theatre don’t worry, it’s been rehearsals of The Jungle Book – a children’s stage version complete with all the favourite songs from the Disney animation.

It’s always a pleasure to see and hear the energy and enthusiasm of our talented youngsters as they get into their roles which this year ranges from cheeky monkeys to sneaky snakes.

We are proud of our role in encouraging children and teenagers to get involved in local theatre - whether they go on to make careers in the showbiz world, or simply enjoy it as a fun hobby, both of which are healthy for the theatre world in general, providing performers and audiences of the future.

Putting on an all-singing, all-dancing show like this doesn’t happen overnight, so well done to our Jungle Book team for their commitment to turn up to rehearsals over many weeks. The curtain goes up tonight (Thursday, April 13) and the show runs until Saturday, so do drop in to support our creative critters if you can.

And thanks to everyone who popped their Tesco tokens into our charity box over Christmas and New Year.

They generated £1,000 from the store’s community fund to help us stage this production.

By the way, did you see the show’s director Nick Earnshaw on national telly this week? Nick is a familiar face at the Little Theatre as an actor, panto creator and dame, but he popped up in another role on Bargain Hunt - talking, not about Jungle Book, but a rather more tranquil, but famous, fishing book.

He appeared as a local history expert in his native Stafford, talking about famous author Isaak Walton, who, in his 60s, penned the Compleat Angler pocket book.

It gives a 17th century insight into the joys of fishing and enjoying the countryside which are good for the soul – as is visiting the theatre of course. You can still find it on iPlayer.

Keeping on the animal theme we have a Squirrel returning to the theatre to provide a bit of variety - which we all know is the spice of life.

Kenny Moore is one half the Squirrels duo who proved a big success with their cheeky cabaret shows.

The pair have amicably gone their separate ways due to showbiz success workloads but Kenny, better known as Ms Special K, is back with a monthly series of similar shows that mix comedy with song, dance and a dash of drag.

If you’re after a fun party night these Big Night Out evenings, with a changing line-up of guests starting on April 22 and running through to September, are a hoot. For more information about shows and tickets visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.
